WordPress 4.4 “Clifford”
WordPress 4.4 dropped a few days ago, and I received a prop again ?
4.4’s flagship feature has got to be REST API scaffolding, which means that applications will now be able to communicate with your site via a RESTful API as opposed to XML-RPC.
I’m excited to see the things that are created with this REST API over the next year or two!
Version 4.4 of WordPress, named “Clifford” in honor of jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown, is available for download or update in your WordPress dashboard. New features in 4.4 make your site more connec…

Hero is pretty proud of his new haircut. He keeps calling himself famous and insists that we call his girlfriend’s mom so that his girlfriend can come over. ?

To help motivate Hero at basketball practice, we pay him a quarter for each basket (up to $5). Last night, every time he scored he came over to tell me I owed him another quarter. ?

Hero’s 7th Birthday Party
We had Hero’s 7th birthday party at the ice rink in Kay Yeager Coliseum. It was perhaps a bit ambitious for his age group considering most of the kids ended up just running around in their shoes… But, all seemed to have fun.
In the interest of not over sharing, I will simply share this one picture of Sara, Hero, and myself on the ice.

Automattic Open-Sourced the New WordPress.com Today!
So we asked ourselves a big question. What would we build if we were starting from scratch today, knowing all we’ve learned over the past 13 years of building WordPress? At the beginning of last year, we decided to start experimenting and see.
Today we’re announcing something brand new, a new approach to WordPress, and open sourcing the code behind it. The project, codenamed Calypso, is the culmination of more than 20 months of work by dozens of the most talented engineers and designers I’ve had the pleasure of working with (127 contributors with over 26,000 commits!).

Today, Automattic open-sourced the codebase that runs WordPress.com. This new codebase is entirely API driven and includes technologies such as Node.js and React.
With my background being in developing WordPress themes for an agency, this past year has been one hell of a roller coaster ride as I’ve learned to work with this new stack. And while there were some stressful times as I retooled, I’m super excited for what I and we have been able to do
For more background on why we decided to rebuild WordPress.com, see Matt’s post titled Dance to Calypso.
For some insight into how this project was approached, see The Story Behind the New WordPress.com
